Sobriety at Safe Space
Many of us used or drank to cope with pain, rejection, or hiding who we are. Here, you don’t have to hide. Sobriety is not about becoming someone else, it is about coming home to who you are. In a world where many LGBTQ+ people have been told to hide, numb, or shrink themselves, choosing sobriety is an act of courage. Here, you are welcome exactly as you are, and you never have to walk this path alone. At Safe Space, we understand that the journey away from alcohol or substance use is more than just the physical act of not using or drinking. It is emotional. It is mental. And for many of us, it is a problem of spiritual imbalance. Service is one of the cornerstones of recovery. At Safe Space, we believe that giving back is not just something we do, it’s something that helps keep us sober, connected, and spiritually grounded. Service is how we turn our experiences, both painful and powerful, into something that can help someone else. In doing so, we often find that we help ourselves too.
This is a place where anyone – regardless of identity, background, belief system, or past – is welcome. While we center to uplift the LGBTQ+ community, we are not exclusive. If you are struggling with alcohol or substance use, you belong here. If you are an ally walking alongside someone or seeking your own recovery, you belong here too.
A Safe Space Means...
We don’t just say “safe space”, we work to create it. A safe space means:
- You are not judged for your identity, your past, or your path
- You are not required to believe what anyone else believes
- You are free to speak about anything, or just listen
- You can show up exactly as you are, even on your hardest days
We honor and uplift LGBTQ+ experiences while remaining open to anyone seeking sobriety. Recovery is not limited to one kind of person, and neither are we.
Sobriety is not about having everything figured out
It’s about today.
If you’re here, that’s enough.
If you’re struggling, that’s okay.
If you’re unsure what you believe, you are not alone.
Just for today, you don’t have to drink or use.
Just for today, you can take one small step forward.
And just for today, you have a place you can come where you are safe, heard, seen, and welcome.
Service within Safe Space
At Safe Space, service helps us create and protect the environment we all rely on. Opportunities to be of service in our group may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Welcoming newcomers and helping them feel safe
- Volunteering for readings or meeting roles
- Assisting with meeting setup or cleanup
- Supporting LGBTQ+ members and allies alike with compassion and respect
Every act of service, no matter how small, helps maintain a space where people can show up as they are.
